Asian
Horror Film News Archive 1 Late Summer 2005 |
|
Voice
aka Ghost Voice (Voice Letter): This is the soon to
be released film and is the 4th film in the The latest installment
in the "Girl's High School Horror" (Yeogo gwedam)
series that started with Whispering Corridors some years ago
has currently had an Asian theatrical release. The series seemingly
continues the haunted school, girls in peril format with the
ghosts and all that jazz. Reported and both good and mediocre,
I have yet to see it but will review it when the DVD comes out. |
|
The
Wig: This is a film about a haunted wig. Yes not a
Phone, Ring or Grudge but a Wig. I have also read that the film
is about the love between two sisters as much as a horror tale.
I am currently brain picking one of my friends in Asia for more
infos to acurately report to you on this title. I was interested
and love the artwork online for the film and also enjoyed the
trailer. More to come on this Asian spookathon so stay tuned
and more news on The Wig will post here in news as it becomes
available. |

Mr.
Vampire (Remastered): The Late Lam Ching-Ying, Hong
Kong's Ultimate Vampirebuster is fighting hopping vampires (Kyonsi)
in this remastered Asian version of the cult classic Mr. Vampire.
I purchased the DVD and was pleased to find the Directors interview
is subtitled in english. This print is as good as it gets and
seems to be the same as the US version recently released in
the United States. This is the film that sparked my interest
in Asian horror thus the birth of Kyonsi dot com. |
|
Dark
Devil: A new Thai horror DVD is soon to be reviewed
on Kyonsi. We ordered the film directly from Thailand. Dark
Devil is a gory film like the horrific (in more ways than one)
Art of the Devil from Thailand. The good thing about Dark Devil
is that it does have english subtitles. A gory tale of Black
Magic that of course causes many gross incidents as well as
backfiring on the evil perp. Recommended for fans of South East
Asian black magic flavored films mostly this DVD has its moments. |
|
The
Echo (Sigaw): A new Phillipines horror offering has
just be screened by Kyonsi dot com and gets our seal of approval
The film has so seriously spooky moments as well as great cinematography
and sound elements. Moving into a haunted apartment was never
more fun. The impressive film called Sigaw originally is being
released under the US title of The Echo. So you better check
under your bed twice after watching this DVD and going to bed,
Full feature will post on Kyonsi ASAP. |
|
One
Missed Call 2 (Chakushin Ari 2): This sequel to T.
Miikes One Missed Call was announced for DVD preorder this week
from sensasian.com see our links page for ordering link. We
liked the first film and are looking forward to this sequel.
I liked the fact that the first film had a zombified corpse
of sorts as well as the pre-requisite "Ringu" style
long black haired ghost. The zombie like ghost added to the
film an uneasy frightening feeling. Even if a friend calls you,
Turn off your cellular NOW!! |
|
APT:
While checking the Mirovision site today for news on "The
Loft" I found this in the new section, an upcoming horror
film from them APT. “Somebody was with me in the darkness”
A young man, who lives in an old apartment suburban of Seoul,
finds himself amused observing opposite side apartments. One
day, he finds out that the lights of some houses on the opposite
apartments kept being turned off at the very same time. More
Korean horror from the Director of "The Phone". |
|
Premonition
(J-Horror Theater): This second film in the J-Horror
Theater being released stateside by Lions Gate Films looks as
damned good as the first one was "Infection", I saw
the trailer and this looks awesome. Synopsis: Based on the cult
classic comic book "Kyofu Shinbun" (Newspaper of Terror),
Premonition follows the story of a man forced to the brink of
insanity by a supernatural newspaper accurately foretelling
the imminent deaths of those around him. Producer: Taka Ichise
. |
|
The
Remaker: “The Remaker” is the third collaboration
between Oxide Pang, Film Bangkok and Chalermthai Studio. “The
Remaker” is due to be release soon in Asia. A man delivering
a brass Buddha replica has a car accident and plunges into a
river. He cannot help himself and is drowning. He's rescued
by a stranger, a girl named Pim passing by and he is rushed
to hospital and recovers quickly. His savior falls into a coma.
Then the supernatural events begin. Sounds interesting to me. |

Bangkok
Haunted & Omen: Panik House US is preparing to
release their first two Asian Horror DVDs of both Bangkok Haunted
and Omen. The cover art (pictured for both) was sent to us by
the company and the tiles both have a sleek and impressive look.
We will be featuring these DVDs when they come out and wish
Panik House the best with their first titles hitting the US
market. As well as Asian Horror, Panik House will also be releasing
Japanese Sukeban films of exploitation nature. |
|
RINGU
(US Box Set): Universal Studios Home Video have announced
the Region 1 DVD release of Ringu Anthology of Terror for late
Aug. 2005. This unique and exclusive multi-DVD set includes
the four internationally acclaimed Japanese films that reinvented
horror and inspired the US remakes: The Ring and The Ring Two.
The original films in the set are to include Ringu, Rasen, Ringu
2 and Ringu 0, will all be presented in anamorphic widescreen
& Japanese Dolby Digital. |
|
Face
To Face (The Snow): Stephen Fung (House Of Fury) stars
in this upcoming Japanese horror film. When Tamotsu (Fung dies
in a skiing accident, his roommate Yoshio not only marries Tamotsu's
wife Ruriko, but also plans to inherit his fortunes. The sudden
appearance of a disfigured old man at Tamotsu's funeral proves
to be the beginning of Yoshio's downfall for his heartless actions.
An atmospheric horror mystery with a surprise ending. Order
from sensasian.com see links page. |
|
The
Fake Ghost Catchers: This Shaw Brothers comedy supernatural
flick to hit Asian DVD finally. This will be a fun film for
fans of the Mr. Vampire type comedy horror films of the past.
Nothing can compare to this amazing showcase of wushu and wizardry
as one of the best all-star fighting casts take on spectres,
spirits, and phantoms as well as each other. Leading them is
legendary director Liu Chia-liang's brother, Liu Chia-yung.
Get that All Region player prepared for more Ghost Fu. |

Kyonsi.com
quoted by ArtsMagic for "EM Embalming" AD:
We were recently quoted from our review of the gory Asian Horror
Crime film "EM Embalming" from the great ArtsMagic
DVD company. I was suprised too see an email stating we were
in the print ads in both "Videoscope Magazine" (see
review in magazines section) and the upcoming issue (or newest
Issue) of the "Giant Robot" magazine. The quote for
this film was "is nothing like other Asian crime-horror",
again we made print! |
|
Look
Out Officer: This Stephen Chow release is of interest
to Kyonsi readers due to the ghost comedy element. This is a
upcoming release from the SB Archives. I have always wanted
to see an official release of this and was happy to get the
news via email last week. This had been floating around in a
crappy boot version that was very poorly done. But all the Shaw
Brothers DVDs I have purchased so far have been nice prints
and even the Celestial Official VCD's I have look good. Go Chow! |
|
Brutal
River: This upcoming film from Thailand looks very
interesting. Although it may not be a straight Asian horror
film its does fit in the Kyonsi genre coverage. The giant croc
or alligator in this film is ferocious and we just watched the
trailer it looks well done. Directed by Anat Yuang - Ngern classified
as Action Drama but they don't look like they are skimping on
the gore at all. Unusual incidents lead the villagers in trying
to track down a murderer, with similar traces of a huge and
hungry animal. |
|
Premonition:
The second film in the J-Horror Theater collection of films
being made in Japan is "Premonition" (pictured), the
first film was the awesome hospital shocker "Infection".
Both are stateside releases from Lions Gate Films and we welcome
the US releases. The films are being promptly released close
to the Asian DVD dates and the US pricing is far better and
affordable than the Import DVDs we have seen of the two films.
We are featuring "Infection" and we have screened
it already. |
|
Samurai
Resurrection: Media Blasters is at it again coming
Mid June 2005. Theres a hell of alot of Samurai horror films
being released and re-released or issued these days. That's
actually a good thing when it comes to Samurai Horror flicks
"I am all about it!". LOL. Synopsis: Character Amakusa
rises from the dead hell-bent on revenge. Resurrecting a ghastly
army of living dead master swordsmen by way of an occult art
called "Makai Tensho" (Demonic Transmigration). That's
Entertainment! |
|
Marebito:
Takashi Shimizu shot this upcoming film in just eight days,
between the production dates for Ju-on: The Grudge and its US
remake The Grudge. Synopsis: A fear-obsessed freelance cameraman
(Shinya "Tetsuo" Tsukamoto) investigates an urban
legend involving mysterious spirits that haunt the subways of
Tokyo. I just saw the trailer online and it looks weird as hell.
Look for a stateside USA DVD release later this year at a date
still TBA. Bottles of blood for the demon girl from below. |
|
Vampires
(The Turning): The new release STV (straight to video)
film is out and now available. The third (unrelated) movie in
the once John Carpenter series of vampire horror films. The
film does not have a connection to the characters in the first
two films. I am listing the films news on Kyonsi as it was filmed
in Thailand and is reportedly steeped in eastern vampire lore
and mysticism. I may get a hold of this new release and see
if its worthy enough to get a DVD review on Kyonsi. |
|
Kibakichi:
To be released soon from MTI/Saiko Films. Enter a
world where geisha turn into giant carnivorous spiders, samurai
change into werewolves, and ghostly monsters and skeletons prey
on humans, "Kibakichi" delivers all the grit of a
spaghetti western with the violent grace of a samurai flick.
I have seen the Japanese trailer for this and it's a trip, Bring
em on MTI/Saiko the more DVD's the better.Stay tuned
to our
Kibakichi page for more details and to pre-order
it. |
