Infection
is the first installment in the Japanese J-Horror series of
films that are going to be released over a period of time. The
next film coming in the series will be "Premonition"
and it is releasing very soon. The Director Masayuki
Ochiai has done a wonderfully haunting job with this film, that's
Produced by Japanese Horror heavyweight Taka Ichise of Ju-On
fame and more (see film facts below). Lions Gate has done am
amazing job with this release on DVD and its a good start to
what looks like will become the reigning Japanese/Asian horror
series of 2005. A really great horror films as well as a bit
of a social message about the state of healthcare and corruption
in Japanese hospitals.

The
DVD is amazingly clear and the sound is top notch as well. The
film is eerily and has an haunting and sometimes disturbing
feel. Infection is wonderfully shot and has great camera work
as well as effective and gory special effects. The DVD id widescreen
with Japanese Language Dolby sound, Trailers, Animated menus,
and Clear and correctly translated English Subtitles (always
a plus with foreign films). Also it has Espanola subtitles for
the spanish viewers.

This
film is straight horror and tells the story of a night shift
at an ailing hospital of overworked and understaffed personal
that haven't even gotten they're paychecks in sometime. The
hospital gets a delivery of a patient, although they do not
want to accept the patient. The patient has some kind of strange
flesh eating like disease. The staff is then sidetracked with
a accidental death of a patient that stems from lack of experience
and training on a nurses behalf. The hospital is running low
on supplies as well and treatment of the patients is at an all
time low. One nurse cannot even administer a shot or draw blood
correctly and make numerous attempts to take blood from a burn
victim in their care. Add to all this incompetence the bizarre
flesh eating diseased patient (left behind by the ambulance)
by now starting to meltdown escaping into the air ducts, the
death of the burned patient, a mentally ill (or is she?) patient
that sees the dead in mirrors and window reflections and some
visiting ghosts (look for the headless one) for good measure.
Not to mention the scandalous death cover up and a bit of a
mad scientist on the staff.

Much
more happens as the mental and physical heath of the staff and
patients rapidly begins to deteriorate. I cannot tell you the
ending of course but there is a twist or two that will really
through you for a loop. An all in all cool movie and the best
Japanese horror film of the year 2005 so far. Stay tuned for
Premonition and more to come. A big thanks to Lions Gate for
releasing this in the USA and a job well done, LGF gets a big
plus for this release from Kyonsi as well as the still upcoming
J-Horror Theater full length segments still to come.
