1.)
In hearing your latest new song samples on myspace I am very
impressed with the musical content what are some of the bands
musical influences?
~ We have a wide array of influences, but the biggest ones range
from THE MISFITS to JOHNNY CASH to HANK III to MINISTRY and
back again. The effect of spaghetti western soundscapes also
plays into our sound.
2.) Tell me a bit about the newest
CD "Bury Them Deep" (I have yet to hear it)?
~ Bury Them Deep is a classic GHOULTOWN disc. It captures the
tequila soaked, deranged fun and fire along with that dark,
dusty overtone that is unmistakably GHOULTOWN. The lyrics on
this album continue to show COUNT LYLE's sharp wit, brilliant
tongue in cheek humor, and the ability to paint a vivid picture
with his words. Another unique part of Bury Them Deep, is that
it also contains an 8x11 pull out poster by Dan Brereton, an
AMAZING artist who's work in THE NOCTURNALS almost echoes GHOULTOWN.
He has done alot of great art including art work for ROB ZOMBIE.
The most important thing about Bury Them Deep, is that YOU SHOULD
OWN IT!!!
3.) How was the feedback from
the new songs you posted and the newest CD "Bury Them Deep"
you have released?
~The feedback has been overwhelming. We're proud of this disc,
and to receive such strong praise about it has been great.
4.)
Does the band plan to play the East Coast more often and include
more cities in any upcoming USA tours?
~ We're working on some tour dates for the summer and fall.
5.) Where can our readers purchase
merch from Ghoultown? What merch is available and how many CD
releases?
~ The fastest and easiest way to get GHOULTOWN stuff is through
our web site www.ghoultown.com . There a few places to find
our cd's and songs, but our web site is still the most efficient.
You can find shirts, stickers, buttons, patches, ......my favorite....
Panties, shot glasses, The GHOULTOWN comic books, and other
fun stuff. Bury Them Deep is our 5th cd available in the states.
6.)
I have seen your band before live at CBGB's do you still have
a horn player live?
~ Yes, we have a new horn player..RANDY GRIMM. (R.I.P.CBGB's)
7.) How is the Psychobilly and
Rockabilly scene in Texas these days? Are there other Texas
bands there that you are into and what are some of the bands
names?
~ The scene here isn't quite what you would expect from Texas.
The bigger Psychobilly and Rockabilly scene's are out west in
Vegas and California. Not to say that we don't have some GREAT
bands around here! Some Texas bands that you should definitely
check out are THE FLAMETRICK SUBS, SHADOW REICHENSTEIN , THE
VON EHRICS, 100 DAMN GUNS, and SPITFIRE TUMBLEWEEDS.
8.) How long has Ghoultown been
a band and what brought your members together?
~ Lyle first had the idea in '98. He and Lizario have been friends
since they were little whipper snappers. I called Lyle after
seeing a flyer in a book store. I couldn't believe what I was
seeing!!! Santi came along in a way that only Santi could have.
We've had a couple of line-up changes along the way, but maintain
a close knit family with each other.
9.) Which kinds of non electric
instruments do you incorporate into your music?
~ We've used acoustic guitars and various percussion quite a
bit. Some things to listen for on disc would be a drawer full
of silverware, and a fistful of celery.
10.)
How has Texas culture affected the music of Ghoultown when it
comes to songwriting and lyrics?
~ Ghoultown embodies alot of what TEXAS is about. Rough and
rugged, but with a south western charm unique to TEXAS. A big
sound from a big state where everything is bigger, and weird
as hell!
11.) What influences your band
to create dark country oriented music?
~ The dirty, bloody old west is fascinating to say the least.
We all have love for horror movies and horror music, along with
westerns and western music. Growing up in the Texas underground
listening to bands such as THE MISFITS and WHITE ZOMBIE, as
well as being exposed to MARTY ROBBINS, JOHNNY CASH, DAVID ALLEN
COE, and many other western greats has had a profound effect.
12.) Can you tell me some of the
themes or story lines that your past CD and new releases have
been about?
~ Plenty of references to life as undead outlaws, ladies of
the night, drinkin', loneliness, card games gone bad, death,
etc.. Lyle is a brilliant lyricist and writer, and comes up
some dark, outrageous, fun, and bizarre storylines.

13.)
Does Ghoultown have a International fanbase?
~ Absolutely. Though we've never toured oversees, there seems
to be as much or geater following in Europe and Australlia as
in the U.S..
14.)
How can your fans reach the band?
15.) What are some of your favorite
bands to play and/or tour with?
~ Playing with THE MISFITS was great!! Having JERRY ONLY on
stage with us is an experience that can't be described! Playing
with HANK III was a blast also. The INDEPENDENTS is probablly
the most FUN band we've toured with. There's never a dull moment
with those guys. ROCK CITY MORGUE and BLITZKID are other bands
that have been a pleasure to tour with.
16.) What happened to the Maltoro
project a while back?
~ MALTORO was something we did for fun. GHOULTOWN got to a point
where the business side of it took over all other aspects, and
became too much work for us to handle on our own. It became
nearly impossible to write and - BE A BAND - with so much else
going on with the business side of it, with no outside help.
We just wanted to get back to making music and being a band
with no real agenda excpet for having a good time with each
other. Once we wrote some great songs, took them on the road,
and decided to record them, we realized that GHOULTOWN was something
that wasn't just going to go away. We also realized that MALTORO
was an extention of where GHOULTOWN was when we decided to take
break. Some MALTORO songs were re-worked a little bit and made
it onto Bury Them Deep, one or two may make it onto the next
GHOULTOWN disc, LIFE AFTER SUNDOWN, and some we'll keep in our
personal collection as another wacky time in our career.
17.) What are some of your band
members past bands or projects?
~ Lyle used to play with the late, great G.G ALLIN. From there,
he was a founding member of doom metal legends SOLITUDE
ATERNUS. After that was THE KILLCREEPS. THE KILLCREEPS
is almost the sci-fi punk/metal equivelent of Ghoultown.
18.) I see that you have comic
books for Ghoultown now, how are they doing?
~ The comics we have sell fairly well. The art house that was
doing the printing went under, so there's been a delay in getting
the next issue out. Along with the fact that Lyle has recently
finished the novel, GHOULTOWN and is focusing more on shopping
that than the comic right now.
19.) Not to lock you into a genre
but what kind of music do you say Ghoultown plays?
~ That's THE hardest question to answer when it comes to GHOULTOWN.
Although we have elements of horror punk, psychobilly, spaghetti
western, metal, western swing and southern rock, we can't really
be tagged with any one of those labels. GOTHABILLY is a term
that comes around alot. HANK III uses the term "HELLBILLY"
. After 8 years we're still at a loss when that question comes
up! Music stores usually just file us in the ROCK section -
except in the Netherlands.
20.) Who does the artwork and
layout on your awesome website?
~ The man himself...... COUNT LYLE.
21.) Do you have any closing comments?
~ Special thanks to all of the friends, fans, family, and Ghoultown
Banditos that have supported us. Keep spreading the word! Look
for GHOULTOWN on the road, and for a new disc soon.
Special
Thanks from AL Santo To: My Friend Count Lyle, Jake Middlefinger
