Yesterday, The Editor and I went to see The Exorcism of Emily
Rose and surprisingly enough, I liked it a lot! I had read about
the film before I saw it so I had a general idea of what to
expect. I must admit, I wanted to see more of Emily's possession
and exorcism and the film failed me in that respect. This may
stem from my background in the horror genre and maybe all the
years I have been exposed to this genre have warped my brain
and my expectations may be too high.
Other
viewers may be completely satisfied with the content the filmed
showed in this regard. On the other hand, this film was a drama
and not a horror film as it is being advertised as and like
any good drama, it captured my attention from the beginning
to the end. Film previews can always be so misleading and this
one is no exception. The film is based on a true story of the
possession, death and trial of a young German woman Anneliese
Michel.

This
film takes Michel's story and presents it with the character
of Emily Rose. The bulk of the film takes place in a court room
but the film flashes back to the possession of Emily Rose to
tell her story.
There
are some very interesting possession scenes and the dialogue
between the demon and priest during the failed exorcism was
riveting. I would have liked to see more of this type of dialogue,
but was also glad it was not a repeat performance of certain
scenes made famous by Linda Blair in The Exorcist. (That film
scares the crap out of me).

Emily's possessions were very realistic and disturbing, but
it was not scary. The film's ending was a little weak and overall
I felt that not enough of Emily's story was being shown or told.
If you are open minded and are not expecting to see a scary
film unleashed with demons and can appreciate a good drama,
I recommend you see this film.

Note:
I also enjoyed this film for the Interesting drama that it was.
Not often do we see a film based on a true courtroom case about
neglect in an exorcism trial. The acting was great and it was
both interesting and entertaining. Recommended (Allen Lee "Editor")
